Assignment 7

1. Go to http://disneyworld.disney.go.com/new-fantasyland/ and look around it a little bit. Now go to http://www.byteland.org/angeloflife. Now why do you think the .com website is more exciting than the .org website?
I think .org pages come from a company or an association. They could either promote sell or offer things among other functions. Besides, I don't think they share a same function. I think .org has a more professional function than .com.

2. Why do you think the Disney website has more hyperlinks, advertisements, and other distracting options to click on?
Well what would be the point of having a website that displays only one image?
Hyperlinks and advertisements give you a broader option of entertainment. That is the function of the website, to promote and entertain. Those type of websites profit from making publicity. If you like THEM you consume their products.

3. If you had to construct/create your own webpage from the beginning, what would you want it to be about and why?
It would be something deep. perhaps a "blog type" website where i share other people's personal experiences or success stories.

4. How many programmers do you think would have to work with you to make your website possible? Would it seem impossible to construct/create a webpage by yourself? Why?
I think I would at least need 2-3 programmers. I COULD TRY to do it by myself but i have no experience in the field.

5. What would you want to name your website? Type that name into the web-address bar, is it taken already?
I'd name it "life is worth it". Well sort of,. When I typed in "lifeisworthit.com" it sent me to this webpage "http://www.liwi.com/". I think it's like a fitness webpage or something. So yeah., the name is taken.

6. Explain why webpages with flash videos, images, and color take longer to load than pages with only text?
Because it has a more complex animation. The simpler the faster. And it takes more time for the computer to process that much information. Images and videos are a much more complex structure than plain text.

Assignment 7

1. What problems does the article mention that children run into when they use search engines?
Most of the times children are not experienced searchers. They have a hard time trying to find keywords related with what they are looking for. Most of the times children search the exact thing they want to know, for example questions like "who is the president?".
2. What suggestions have been offered for how search engines can improve their product to lessen children’s problems searching?
Instead of searching words you could search images. Suggested searches appear under the typed words. Also, it is believed that children don't have problems of their own. They're the same problems adults have, but magnified.
3. Do you search using keywords or questions? How does the article characterize these two types of searching?
I usually use keywords that relate to my topic. In this article they suggest the usage of keywords, search engines try to facilitate your searches by suggesting them to you.
4. Have you tried using images or videos to search? How does the article characterize this type of searching?
Nope
This would be a very innovative style of searching but more appropriate for children.
5. What advice would you give to Internet search engine developers (like Google or Bing) for how they should improve their product? Do you think any of the improvements mentioned in the article are particularly promising? Why?
I don't really have problems when researching a topic, but I would suggest improvements in the search engine's suggestions.
I thinks some of the ideas they show are promising because children will be more capable of searching in search engines more effectively.

Online poll results

1)Do you think the results are 100% accurate? Why or why not?
Sometimes, most of the people just answered randomly to finish faster.

2)How much of an impact do you think the wording of the questions has on the answers you received?
It has a lot of impact, the readers must be able to understand the questions and to know what the author is trying to ask.

3)Did you get the results you expected from your online polls? Why?
Not really, as I said before, most of them did it randomly or very fast.

4) If you wanted to do an online poll with the students of Technologico de Montorrey asking them how much time and effort they spent doing homework this year, what are the steps you would take to complete that online poll?
First of all I would use different polls for the different grades, then, I'd think of the exact question I want to make, I would make it an open answer question in order to have more flexibility and to avoid putting a limit or a maximum of hours or minutes.

5)Do you think online polling could help the administration of Tech de Montorrey find out more about their students? Or do you think that the results would not be accurate? Why or why not?
I think that the results won't be THAT accurate because we are most likely not going to take it seriously.

6)How do you think the results of your polls would be different if you asked your classmates the questions in person?
If I did it face to face the answers would be more accurate because there are no limitations and they would be able to be more specific. Besides the answers would be more complicated.

7) In what ways do you think online polling using Google Spreadsheets can be improved? Or was it easier to create an online poll than you originally thought? Explain.
It was easier than I expected, there could be some improvements though.

Assignment 5

1. In your own words describe how the workplace culture at Google encourages innovation and unique creations for the company? How does working at Google and the environment there affect its workers?
Despite the fact that Google's employees are a very unique kind of talented persons, Google always tries to improve their work. They achieve that by making them feel comfortable on their work place. They have different "attractions" or commodities like professional cuisine, toys, 3D printers, and lots of free hours. By doing this they make their employees feel comfortable and without pressure in order to improve their work.

2. How does employee freedom, like the 20% of free time Google encourages its employees to spend on any project they want, deliver better business?
Because this way more ideas are created. The more ideas there are , the more projects Google may create. Of course many of those ideas may be discarded but great ideas might come up for the company to develop. You never know when a great innovative idea might come up, besides letting their employees develop any project they want encourages entrepreneurship, besides, the more projects you make the more you want to make and  more ideas come to your mind.

3. What are the requirements to work for Google? And what is different about the way they hire employees at Google?
There are no real "requirements" to work at Google, the only characteristics they are interested in are entrepreneurship, leadership and your compatibility with Google's working style. In other companies they usually ask for records, where did you study? What career were you in? Grades? But in Google past experiences don't really matter, they are more interested in getting to know HOW you think. They wan't you to have a diverse set of abilities and skills but all kinds of, not only intellectual.

4. How many search queries does Google handle a day?
Google has seen more than 30 trillion URLs and crawls 20 billion pages a day. 3 billion searches are conducted a day.
5. In your own words discuss how Google's constantly refined search algorithm changed the way we all access and even think about information.
You want the answer, not trillions of webpages. Algorithms are computer programs that look for clues to
give you back exactly what you want. Usually algorithms only focus on the words you use when you search something. Google's algorithm not only uses the words used during a search but also page rank and most interestingly region.

6. Take a look at the following story about Google's top secret data center. Now why would Google want to keep its server room as a secret?
There are different factors that make this image very interesting to me. Why would Google be so worried about the "access" limitation? I may not be an expert on the subject but what could other companies figure out that is so important in this room? Another things that intrigues me are the colors, these mad arrangement of tubes seem to be classified by a color label, which (with the exception of pink) happen to be Google's signature colors. Is there a meaning we do not understand behind Google's insignia colors?

7. What are the benefits of working as a Google employee?
Google has all the benefits you'd expect from a big company, like health insurance and retirement benefits. What makes Google's employee treatment special goes beyond the "expected". From what I've read I can infer that Google really wants the best for their workers. I d not blame them for wanting the best for them, who wouldn't protect those brilliant minds? It seems like Google wants their employees to improve not only as workers but as persons, ensuring their mental and physical health and fitness. Google never pressures it's workers and gives them all sorts of commodities. They make them feel comfortable and happy by addapting their working place to their needs and preferences.

8. Name at least 5 different positions at Google (ex: software engineer, Google tester, interaction designer) and describe what they do?

  • ADMINISTRATORS Administrative professionals at Google are responsible for a wide range of functions aimed to support production and executive teams in organizing tasks and calendars and managing information.
BUSINESS OPERATION Business operations personnel are concerned with growing Google's multi-national business operations and increasing revenue flow.
MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS Marketing and communications professionals at Google undertake a wide array of tasks to advertise Google products online and offline using text and video. Individuals working in these departments are encouraged to think of advertising and brand management in unconventional ways as the nature of advertising Internet products is still in its infancy.
USER EXPERIENCE TEAMS The user-experience team is concerned with ensuring that Google products provide the average user with a pleasant and efficient interface, whether it is the email client, search or advertising elements.
LEGAL AND PUBLIC POLICY Legal and public policy jobs at Google serve a number of purposes that overlap. The legal department provides Google with the staff needed to facilitate fair and legal user agreements and to guide the company in arranging their policies in a just fashion.

9. Talk about at least 3 projects that Google is currently working on. What do they want to accomplish? How long will they take to complete?
1) Google's Driverless car program has been in the works for a few years now. The company has been working with lawmakers to allow testing of autonomous cars on public roads. Google has approval for the project in two states, California and Nevada. Google has a test fleet of at least ten vehicles that can drive themselves.
2) Google Glass is a wearable computer that lets you read your tweets, check calendar appointments, the weather, and a ton of other things without pulling your smartphone out. The screen rests right above your field of vision making it easy to glance up to get info. The gadget is ushering in a new wave of wearable technology for the masses. So far, only a few thousand developers and journalists have access to an early version of Google Glass.
3) Android@Home is Google's home automation technology. It aims to connect your entire house to the internet like something out of a sci-fi movie.Imagine a day when your refrigerator can order milk for you when you're running low. This is the type of technology that Android@Home will offer. It also includes connected light bulbs, coffee pots, and other household items.

10. Look at the following story about why recent college graduates should not work for Google. Why does the writer argue recent graduates should not work at Google?
Working for Google must seem like a great thing for sure, but is working FOR someone really worth it?
Young graduates refuse proposals to work at Google because Google is already a giant. Why would they help Google get bigger if they can make smaller companies grow and succeed. Also, some graduates dream of having their own company that may someday compete with the internet giant. Instead of making something big into something huge they would rather make something small, big, this may bring benefits like competition and TRUE entrepreneurship.

11. How is Google the same or different than other search engines, like Yahoo or Bing?
The purpose is most likely the same, but again, going back to search algorithms Google is much more accurate in some aspects. Google usually guesses what you are trying to say correctly, on the other hand Bing just gives you an annoying amount of links. Google's search algorithm helps them address the searcher's needs. Google understands better than any other company that a search engine needs to achieve two goals in order to be successful: it needs to be simple to use and it needs to get rid of users as quickly as possible. Some may think that Yahoo has better results than Google, but the problem with it is that the main page is littered with extra junk that only confuses the person looking to perform a simple search.  On the other hand, Google.com features the search bar and little else, making it abundantly clear to the user that searching is the primary function of the site. And while other search engines may be just as easy to use, aside from Google, no other search engine has been able to master the art of getting you to your destination as quickly as possible.Search is all about the user experience.  And so far, only Google has mastered that art.
